NCTE National Convention
After meeting Andi, Angela, Beth, and Molly at the WLU Conference in Louisville last month, I decided to attend the 2007 NCTE Convention in New York City. (Those four ladies will also be presenting at NCTE on 11/17 in a session called “OBSERVING DIVERISTY: A 21ST CENTURY CLASSROOM INQUIRY JOURNEY.”) I received the convention preview newspaper today and was pleased to see a preview of some of the session topics for writing and assessment. After getting excited to see all of the great sample sessions listed I went online to the NCTE: My Convention Schedule Page and selected K-5 Topics, for the days I wanted, and with the focus of writing. Boy oh boy! I better plan on getting a good night’s sleep before the Convention because there’s going to be a lot for me to see and do once I get to NYC. Here’s my tentative plan (which is subject to change):

Saturday:
9:30 a.m.: WHERE HAS ALL THE REAL CHOICE GONE? REVISITING AN ESSENTIAL ELEMENT IN WRITING INSTRUCTION with Peter H. Johnston and Katie Wood Ray
1:15 p.m.: WRITERS LEARNING FROM AUTHORS IN AN ESL CLASSROOM with Carol Bedard
2:45 p.m.: LITERACIES ON THE MARGINS: INVITING STUDENTS INTO THE CONVERSATION with Nicole Johnson and others
4:15 p.m.: MAPPING RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN WRITERS AND READERS: THE INFLUENCE OF AUDIENCE IN THREE CONTEXTS with Shanon Benson
Sunday:
8:30 a.m.: INSPIRING GREAT WRITING with Jody Polleck
11:30 a.m. CHILDREN BETWEEN WORLDS: ARE YOU A SETTLER? with Peter Sis
1:00 p.m.: OF LITERACIES AND JUSTICE FOR ALL with Lora Zill
Can you tell I’m really looking forward to this conference?

I think I will be joining you for the first session with Peter and Katie. I can’t wait!
Yipee — I’m glad you’ve decided to attend, earlier this year, you had mentioned it wasn’t going to work out. I’ll be there too!
Did you see Jonathan Kozal & Amy Tan are going to be there too?
New York here we come! I can’t wait to go and see you there! Andi
