It’s been published!
Last Thursday, the D’var Torah I was working on and posted about last month was finally published with my synagogue’s weekly newsletter! Very little of what I wrote was edited and/or changed by a third-party. That being said, I’m exceedingly proud of the fact that I went through the writing process, as a teacher, and came up with a product I’m satisfied with.
This makes me think that teachers of writing should aim to publish at least one piece of writing each year that goes out into the world and is read by a larger audience. I’m not talking about journal articles, I’m talking about short stories, poems, or essays (like the one I wrote). Publishing this piece allowed me to have more empathy for the amazing work I ask my students to do each and every day in Writing Workshop. It’s hard work, but when you see the final piece, and your can literally see other people reading it, it makes all of the hard work worth it.
