Prizes for the Fifth Annual Slice of Life Story Challenge
It’s my pleasure to announce the winners of the prizes from the 5th Annual Slice of Life Story Challenge. While I thought about using technology for the giveaway, I opted to do it the old fashioned way… pulling names out of a hat (well, in this case, an envelope). Here’s a look at my not-so-high-tech system:
First, I put all of the names of the folks who said they wanted to be in the running for the All Write Summer Institute into an envelope.
Next, I put everyone's names into an envelope. From there, I went through the prizes, from the top of the list to the bottom, and drew out names.
My trusty assistant, Isabelle, helped me draw some of the names out of the envelope.

Before I announce who won what, let me explain how you should CLAIM your prize if you won.

If I do not receive an e-mail from each of the prize winners by the evening of the 15th, then I will continue drawing names of other slicers out of the envelope so I can fulfill all of the prizes in a timely manner.
Since we had more than 30 people who wrote and linked daily during the Slice of Life Story Challenge, some folks who completed the Challenge didn’t win a prize. Remember, the greatest prize of all comes from being part of a writing community where you can develop pieces of writing and get feedback on your work as a writer daily. Thank you to everyone who made the Fifth Annual Slice of Life Story Challenge a wonderful writing experience. I hope to see everyone back daily on Tuesdays all year long!

The All Write Consortium will donate a free registration to the ALL WRITE!!! SUMMER INSTITUTE to Barbara Phillips.
Linda Baie, who slices year-round, will send a copy of Poem Crazy by Susan G. Wooldridge to Kat Calzini.
Choice Literacy will send “Write from the Start” featuring Ruth Shagoury and Andie Cunningham on writing conferences with young ELL students to Cyndy McKenzie and a one-year subscription to Choice Literacy to Michelle Nero.
Chronicle Books will send a selection of their favorite children’s books + a beautiful journal to Julie Johnson.
Cinco Puntos Press will send a prize package with two books: Maximilian and the Mystery of the Guardian Angel written and illustrated by Xavier Garza and Saltypie – A Choctaw Journey from Darkness into Light by Tim Tingle illustrated by Karen Clarkson to Mary Lynch.
Heinemann will be sending Crunchtime by Gretchen S. Bernabei, Jayne Hover, and Cynthia Candler to Alan Wright, Hidden Gems by Katherine Bomer to Chris Rayner, and Mentor Author, Mentor Texts by Ralph Fletcher to Peggy Demchak.
Five-time March SOLSC participant Kevin Hodgson will be sending Barbara Klinger a copy of his book Teaching the New Writing.
Kids Can Press will be sending Tammy Klinger a a “First Time Author Picture Book Prize Pack,” which will include the the following titles: Daisy’s Perfect World, Dear Flyary, My Name Is Elizabeth!, and Vote for Me!
Juliann Phillips, who has also sliced for five straight years in the SOLSC, will be sending a fabric covered composition book journal to Beth Scanlon.
Responsive Classroom is donating one book from the Responsive Classroom Spring 2012 Catalog to Katherine Sokolowski.
Christy Rush-Levine, who slices year-round, donated four prizes: a hand-stamped moleskine notebook (with a natural kraft paper cover), a hand-stamped binder (natural chipboard cover with a green fabric spine), a homemade framed inspirational nudge to keep writing, and an “I Write” mouse pad from BookFiend. I’ll let Christy decide which prize to match up with each of the following people: Kari Dyer, Pamela Hodges, Kipp Moyer, and Stacey Walz.
Stenhouse Publishers is donating one book to five different month-long Slicers. The following people will be able to choose the book they wish to receive: Sue Bickel, Gail Hennessy, Laura Jackson, Linda Kulp, Marika Paez Wiesen.
The Two Sisters, Gail Boushey and Joan Moser, donated four one-year memberships to The Daily Cafe. Those memberships go to Kim Barrett, Maureen Ingram, Kelly Mogk, and Karen Terlecky.
Amy Ludwig Vanderwater, of the Poem Farm Blog, donated one glass dip pen, which goes to Laura Komos.
Although I am very excited to have won a prize, I must say the slicing experience was wonderful. A big thanks to Ruth for encouraging me to try it. I plan to be a freqyent Tuesday slicer.

My kindergarten students and I enjoyed writing everyday in March. I, too, felt a connection with this writing community, especially since we are all teachers, and I knew who my audience was when I wrote. I will continue to write on Tuesdays (that’s my plan, but I haven’t done so yet). Thanks for the prize- I look forward to receiving it, but I agree with the others: the gift was being motivated to write- something that I love to do!!
We all got to do what every student should be able to do- write about things that matter and that we care about. The sharing, the feedback was the added bonus. A sincere thank you to those who donated prizes and a huge thank you to all those writers out there in Slice Land. May your pens never run out…

I am thankful to have won a prize. But the best prize of all, was being part of this writing community. Writing every day has healed my soul, and let demons escape.
