“What is the purpose of writing? For me personally, it is really to explain the mystery of life, and the mystery of life includes, of course, the personal, the political, the forces that make us what we are while there’s another force from inside battling to make us something else.”

    1. Your neighbor is an inspiration, and so are you. It would be easier to stay in the cocoon of your own family, but the world is a better place because of your willingness to reach out to this family with its challenges–and its opportunities. Each child is perfect in his or her own way, and your post reminds us of that important fact. Thank you.

    1. Your brother is fortunate to have a concerned listener. Your brother gave you a gift in trusting you with his serious concerns. It is far easier to share our superficial worries. Thank you for the reminder to pay attention.

    1. Carol, Thank you for sharing your memories of your grandmother and your connection to Rome, New York. We share a similar heritage, only it was my great-grandmother who came to America in 1902. She and her husband came to Pennsylvania where he worked on the railroad and she raised her children, gardened, and crocheted. These women were remarkably strong to leave all that they knew and loved in exchange for a new land, new language, and new traditions. Your tribute to her is beautiful.

    1. Melanie, Your story would make a lovely children’s book. It has all the elements of a good story and great potential for illustrations. I hope you keep us posted as you develop your ideas!

  2. The New Orleans Writing Project issued an invitation to anyone to virtually join their Writing Marathon this week. I am visiting Chicago, so it’s a wonderful opportunity to document my visit. Today, I look at John Mellencamp’s “Small Town” in regards to my small town life and my visit to the big city. http://wp.me/p4cUNp-4T
