I teach Writing Workshop, Language Arts and Social Studies to sixth graders at a middle school in suburban New Jersey. This blog is my attempt to capture all the "stuff" that goes into my teaching life - the planning, the dreaming, the reading, the preparing, the hoping and (above all) the kids.     1. Your neighbor is an inspiration, and so are you. It would be easier to stay in the cocoon of your own family, but the world is a better place because of your willingness to reach out to this family with its challenges–and its opportunities. Each child is perfect in his or her own way, and your post reminds us of that important fact. Thank you.

    1. Carol, Thank you for sharing your memories of your grandmother and your connection to Rome, New York. We share a similar heritage, only it was my great-grandmother who came to America in 1902. She and her husband came to Pennsylvania where he worked on the railroad and she raised her children, gardened, and crocheted. These women were remarkably strong to leave all that they knew and loved in exchange for a new land, new language, and new traditions. Your tribute to her is beautiful.

  45. I am back, having missed writing for two weeks, an I hope you will enjoy my slice from today, It is a about letting go and moving forward as a parent and a teacher, inspired by a local news clip and and a quote that was perfectly timed.

  47. The New Orleans Writing Project issued an invitation to anyone to virtually join their Writing Marathon this week. I am visiting Chicago, so it’s a wonderful opportunity to document my visit.
