Looking for Slice of Life writing ideas? Here’s a slice about welcoming news of a new family member; it was written by John for our sixth grade March Challenge a few years ago:

It was a cool and breezy Friday morning. Around 9:45am, I began to wonder and hope. “Sometime soon,” I thought. Today, I will have a brand new tiny baby cousin! I cannot even wait! Since the beginning of the school year, I have known that the end of February would be a very special time for my cousins and family. Fortunately, when this new little person is a few years older, he/she will have many playmates because he/she will have four older siblings. There are already three older brothers and one older sister. The baby is going to be number five!
The rest of that day flew by. At home, I could barely concentrate on my homework. In addition to the new baby, my Nana was having surgery on that same day. This was a enormous medical day for our entire extended family. All of a sudden, the phone rang, I jumped out of my chair, and bolted to grab the phone. My chest almost exploded with excitement, as my heart was beating a trillion times a second! “Was it about Nana or the baby?” I wondered. I picked up the telephone and said, “Hi, who is calling, please?”
“Hello John, this is your Aunt Janice speaking. I think you will not believe what happened this morning at 9:47am,” she said calmly. “Your new cousin is here and the best part is that it is another boy!” My heart now skipped a beat and I was speechless for once in my life. Then Aunt Janice said, “His name is Eoin, and he can’t wait to meet you. Do you think you can teach him to shoot hoops and hit home runs?”
