The purpose of Ruth’s other blog aims to inspire readers and writers. She definitely did that with me today! I decided that what I had already bought my Mom for her upcoming birthday was not enough. Thus, I took Ruth’s idea and transformed a memoir I wrote about my Mom for Lucy’s Writing Class in 2006. I wrote it nearly a year ago, but haven’t shared it with my Mom. Therefore, I decided to create some 12″ x 12″ pages that reflected my feelings towards my Mom in this memoir. Here’s what they look like:
However, I didn’t stop there. I created two more pages and was thinking of binding this memoir together as a book. These are the other two pages I created. If I give them to her together with the yellow ones that contain the memoir, then I am not sure how they should be ordered. (Suggestions will be happily accepted in the form of comments to this blog posting.) Here’s what they look like:
This one was inspired by the Josh Groban Song, “You Raise Me Up.” To that end, I wrote a little poem on each page of the thing that looks like a present on the lower left-hand side of this page. It’s actually a little book type of thing.
Working on this project for my Mom’s upcoming birthday makes me realize that we can give our writing to others as gifts. Perhaps this can become a “center” within our classrooms… a place where children can go to publish their writing/turn it into presents for their loved ones.

love this! here’s what i’m thinking if you want to make it into a book —
1. Add a title page & a dedication page.
2. I made my parents a “True Love” album, highlighting the weddings in our family, going back several generations. In between each “wedding spread” I put a quote spread. This “beefed up the book” a bit. If you’re looking for a way to add a few more pages without adding a lot of time, this may work.
3. Your mom’s going to LOVE this — I take it she’s not a regular blog-reader? 🙂

BTW — What a great example of including LOTS of writing on the page. I’ve used scrapbook pages with my students in the past — I learned the hard way that the sample is a key — or they forget about the importance of the writing. It’s neat to see kids learning how to use more than words to communicate their stories. Plus you can get into symbolism, but there’s a whole ‘nother story in itself.
